Buying dairy, eggs & fridge on special
Chilled products are the hardest category to stockpile, because the discount is nearly always tied to a short remaining shelf life. Cheese, yoghurt, cream and dips go to half price when the store needs the space, which usually means a use-by date within a week or two.
Hard cheese and butter freeze well and are the two things worth buying extra of — butter in particular keeps for months in the freezer with no change in how it behaves. Yoghurt, cream and fresh dips do not freeze usefully. If you are buying discounted dairy, plan the meals that use it before you put it in the trolley, or it becomes an expensive way to fill the bin.
