Buying bakery on special

Packaged bakery items — sliced bread, wraps, crumpets, English muffins and long-life bakery goods — turn up at half price when a brand is being promoted or a line is being cleared. Fresh in-store bakery bread is discounted at the end of the day rather than in the catalogue, so it does not appear here.

Bread freezes better than most people expect. A loaf frozen on the day of purchase and toasted straight from frozen is close to indistinguishable from fresh, which makes half price bread one of the easier things to buy two of. Wraps and pita freeze equally well. Anything with a cream or custard filling does not.
